School Board Parent Candidates
John Gabites
Since joining the Sorrento community in early 2021 as parents with my wife Jessica to our Year two twins Annabelle & Callum, I have been impressed with the culture of the staff, the highly engaged community and fantastic facilities. The Sorrento values also really resonate with me – pursuing excellence, open & honest communication and being innovative & inspiring in particular. I am very keen to get further involved with the school and contribute to the great work being done; I see the board as the best place for me to do that.
I am a Chartered Professional Engineer employed in the upstream Oil & Gas industry, hold a PhD in Chemical & Process Engineering and am a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. I have also previously played international level sport as part of the New Zealand Senior Men’s volleyball team.
Despite being the black sheep of a family of teachers, I am also passionate about lifelong learning and believe my project management and team leadership experience, coupled with values-based decision making and enjoyment in helping bring out the best in others, would add real value to the Sorrento PS board.
Linda Neame
My name is Linda Neame and my family and I were warmly welcomed into the Sorrento Primary School Community in 2017. I am a Registered Midwife and Nurse working part time at King Edward Memorial Hospital which I absolutely love. I have two children, Zac (Yr 4) and Chloe (Yr 2) and would love to be considered as a Board Member for SPS for 2022.
I thoroughly enjoy being a part of our school community. It’s been so great meeting new families and working together to provide a positive learning environment for our children, their class members and teachers.
Since 2017 we have already seen so much growth and development including literacy and mathematics extension and vocational programs, changes to the classroom learning environments and materials, updated library resources and the addition of robotics, Lego club, sports equipment, Wicking Wonderland, art design and nature play just to name a few.
Education is a huge part of our children’s lives. School provides not only a safe learning environment but a place where important social and emotional connections grow. I would love to play a part in prioritising the areas that help develop these skills in line with the Sorrento Primary School Business Plan.
Fiona Schopf
I have been an active member of the school board for the last two years and I would like to renominate to be part of the board in 2022. Currently, as well as being a parent, I am part of the school community, as an external service provider, in my role as the school Chaplain. I also work at Springfield Primary School as the Chaplain. I believe that through my experiences in education and through my networks in chaplaincy I bring valuable experience to the school board, particularly in the area of wellness and pastoral care. I am excited to continue to support Anne Alford and the team at Sorrento as they continue to provide for the educational needs of our children. I believe what I bring to the board is a clear understanding of the support the school needs to flourish and grow. I look forward to providing feedback on key policies and plans and also being able to be a positive voice in the community for the school.

Being a father of four girls, with Sienna and Imogen currently enrolled, I believe that I could support the board in its role of developing and reviewing school policies. We moved to Perth 3 years ago from a small rural community, so I understand the importance of the engagement between the children, parents and the school. With the small community in mind I see how fortunate we are living in Sorrento and would like to be a part of facilitating ways of developing that community spirit throughout the school.
With Morwenna being an Early Childhood and Primary school trained teacher, we have a keen interest in our children’s education and I feel that I could add value to the board.
Mark Wells
Dad of 3 Sienna 9, Jackson 7 and Hudson 4 (starts Kindy next year), Married to Melinda. We moved from a small country town 1hr 30 mins East of Melbourne in January 2019 to Perth to spend our days by the beach and to a warmer climate. Schooling was always a big factor in where we lived and after meeting with 8 other Primary Schools, Sorrento is where we landed solely based off our feel for Sorrento Primary and what it had to offer.
I work for a large steel and mining company of 25,000 employees worldwide, Infrabuild, and manage their rural business in WA and have been with the company for around 15 years. I have a passion for my kids and their education and feel that as parents the greater we contribute as a family the more our children will benefit and being a part of the P&C as well as contributing to other school activities/functions really gets us all involved.
